Vibrations Per Second

Vibrations per second is a way to define a tone, at least from a scientific point of view. The 'vibration' doesnt have to be a string either, A good example would be a car engine. An engine uses revolutions per minute instead of vibrations per second but it still produces tones, A car running at 6390 rpms would produce an A tone... (6390 revolutions per minute converts to 106.5 revolutions per second which would be a low A)...

Mouseover the tones on the Chart to hear that 'tone'...

A lawn mower sounds different than a guitar, But you could still find out what tone it was sounding by fishing around on the guitar while your lawn mower is running, You can also hear a car humming when you are on the highway at a steady speed. The car thing may be more sensible because your neighbors may think your a little flipped out if they see you serenading your lawnmower...
