Tone Order is only for the purpose of determining what the actual chord is which can sometimes be hard, A common chord scrambled looks like something complex so its best to determine the natural ordering before trying to determine the chord...
C E G - Natural tone order of C major...
E G C - C major scrambled...
E G B - E minor's natural tone order...
G E B - E minor scrambled...
B E G - E minor scrambled...
B G E - E minor scrambled...
When you have 2 tones then there are two different ways they can be arranged, When you have three tones then it jumps up to six different arrangements. Anytime you see an E, F, B or C then be aware that these can be referenced by being sharpened or flattened, This adds confusion because (E F B C) can be represented as (Fb, E#, Cb, B#)...
E G B
E B G
G E B
G B E
B E G
B G E
The aliases for B and E adds on eighteen more different naming variations for the E minor chord, So when you think about it you can take one (1) three tone chord (EGB) and make it look like 24 different chords just by shuffling the tones around, The (E and F) can each represent the other and the (B and C) can each represent the other but all the other tones dont have aliases unless you use double ##' or bb's which should be avoided...
Fb G Cb
Fb G B
E G Cb
Fb Cb G
Fb B G
E Cb G
G Fb Cb
G Fb B
G E Cb
G Cb Fb
G Fb B
G E Cb
Cb Fb G
G Fb B
G E Cb
Cb G Fb
G Fb B
G E Cb
With four tones you will have twenty four different combinations of tones, With a four tone chord each tone will take the lead and then the other three can then be shuffled six times. Take note that any chord with the root not up front is inverted, the order of inversions are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and when the root's up front then it's dubbed 'root inversion' which is not really inverted...
E G B F
E G F B
E B G F
E B F G
E F G B
E F B G
G E B F
G E F B
G B E F
G B F E
G F E B
G F B E
B E G F
B E F G
B G E F
B G F E
B F G E
B F E G
F E G B
F E B G
F G E B
F G B E
F B E G
F B G E
We won't do it but a five tone chord would have one hundred and twenty (120) combinations where each tone would take the lead and then scramble the remaining four tones 24 times, A six tone chord produce 720 different options on ordering but we always say that five tones is borderline chord/scale so six tones to us is a scale...
When you scramble the tones of a chord then you will no doubt create tens of thousands of chords, The question is if each variation qualifys as a different chord or if only the unscrambled tones are considered a chord, We think strongly that a scrambled C major is still a C major...

72 x's 7 = 504
288 x's 9 = 2592
22 x's 2 = 44
1440 x's 1 = 1440
We figure there are 401 unique chords that can be scrambled to create 12024 chords, Learning four hundred chords is alot easier than learning twelve thousand chords so always determine the actual chord...
