The Major Scale shapes are probably easiest described as modes, You basically chop up the major scale into seven smaller peices that interlock with each other. Each of the shape sets below are for all 12 keys, The roots (white dots) shown are the root of the 'scale shape' and not the key. The Major and Minor labeling goes along with the starting tone of the shape...
All of the chords of a key can be played within each of the blocks when using the major scale. Instead of placing dots on your guitar, you should be able to look at your fretboard and see the patterns. The first pattern above is somewhat easy because the top two and bottom two strings use the same patterns, The pentatonic shapes are somewhat easy -
The "Pentatonic Scale Shapes" are similar in theory to the major scale shapes, It is the pentatonic scales chopped into smaller peices that interlock together. Its best to learn one block at a time and then learn how they interlock...
