Scale Runs

Scale runs are just practing playing up and down the scales, You should not think in 'modes' because one scale is seven modes, The best scale to start with is "C to C" which is also known as some other things...

Key of C...
C Lonian mode...
C major scale...

Now that you know to play "C to C" then the next step is 'which one' as there are 20+ different ways to play "C D E F G A B C", This is why you want to learn the scale in blocks with wider scale runs...

If you are a little more advanced and have the major scale (C) under your belt then you can practice more advanced scale runs, This is where you can practice the modes and modifications including key changes...

G to G...  mixolydian
G# to G#                Augmented 5...  Aka. Harmonic Minor...
A to A...   aeolian
A# to A#                 Augmented 6...
B to B...    locrian
C to C...    lonian
C# to C#                 Augmented 1... Aka. Melodic Minor...
D to D...   dorian
D# to D#                 Augmented 2...
E to E...    phrygian
F to F...    lydian
F# to F#...                 (Key of G)...

It may take you months to learn all the modified scales and its dependant on how well you know the only true scale (major), The coming video will be all eight 'major scales' and the four augmented scales played next to each other...

Key of C (E to E)...

Key of C (F to F)...

Key of C with a sharp IV... (Key of G)...

Key of C (G to G)...

Key of C with a sharp V. (G# to G#)...

Key of C (A to A)...

Key of C with a sharp VI. (A# to A#)...

Key of C (B to B)...

Key of C with a sharp I. (C# to C#)...

Key of C (D to D)...

Key of C with a sharp II. (D# to D#)...

Key of C (E to E)...

It would be a 'semi long term' goal to learn to play all twelve of the diagrams shown above, Eight of them are simple 'modes' and the other four are modifications of the scale as a whole, You should also note that this is on the center position of the master scale...

The 'center position' of the master scale can be seen by looking at the 'first position of the Key of C', This is a term we have made up to distinguish one position of the 'grand pattern', When you learn the center pattern then you can move it around or move onto another position...

Center Position (Key of C)...

Center Position (Key of Db)...

Center Position (Key of D)...

Center Position (Key of Eb)...

After you learn the twelve 'center position' 'scale patterns' we have shown above then you can move onto more complex scale runs in one key, Learning all of these together is the most complex of all the scale runs you can practice (Even just for the center position), Other scale run practices can be categorized in different categories...

Simple Scale Runs - These scale runs are made for when you are super new to playing, They are designed to get your fingers used to playing...

Aug5 Scale Runs - This shows the 'key of C' compared to the 'key of C with an augmented fifth'...

more to come...
