The 'NMPA' thinks that free 'transcriptions' choke out the artist and that they are 'doing it for the artist', Well the food chain shows who is choking who and its most likely the musician and the artist as well. The streams or royalties vary from listener to performer, The listener may purchase the same CD two or three times in their lifetime and the musician will as well.
IF a musician purchases a song transcription then the artist gets 'one' royalty payment from the sheet music publishers, If the musician were to play the song three times a week then the artist would get 'three' royalty payments each week - directly... The value of the 'transcriptions' are bloated, It would be different if anyone could just look at the sheet music and play it instantly - We all know that's not true, Sometimes learning a song can take months or years if you are 'learning'...
The graph shows the 'sheet music' publishers at the bottom (How ironic), The 'music' publishers are the ones that make the CD's you buy in the store. The musicians are in the chain twice if they are 'learning', Not only do they pay royalties to purchase the CD but pay royalties if they want to buy the sheet music - By looking at the graph you can see that once the 'musician' learns how to play a song and plays out in public then they must pay 'performance' royalties, If they take it a step farther and release a CD with 'cover' tunes of the songs they learned then they have to pay royalties on that...
The only reason 'sheet music' publishers have to pay royalties is because they are using copyrighted material for commercial purposes, They aren't teaching you how to play the instrument and really have no intentions or interest in teaching you - The 'NMPA' should take out the word 'education' from their statements on why they support the 'sheet music publishers', And most importantly they need to stop saying they are cracking down on tabsites for the sake of the artist...
