Pentatonic Patterns

The Pentatonic Patterns are the coolest demonstration of the strong connection to math, Each of the 12 keys has 'Three (3)' pentatonic patterns so in the Key of C you will find that the "E minor pentatonic" pattern is used three times...

E pentatonic - A pentatonic - D pentatonic

When you are playing in the lower position (first four frets) then you can play three different 'pentatonic patterns' and still be in the Key of C, Here we are showing the 'minor pentatonic' pattern on the right and what it ends up being in the lower position...

E minor pentatonic - E minor pentatonic...

Key of C with no F or C...

F major pentatonic - D pentatonic...

Key of C with no E or B...

E minor pentatonic - A minor pentatonic...

Key of C with no B or F...

We always say to 'not' name the pentatonic 'major or minor' because there is more than one pattern for either one, When you look at the fretboard patterns for the pentatonic scale then you will find 'three pentatonic minor' patterns in each pentatonic scale...

E pentatonic minor - First Position pattern...

E pentatonic minor - Second Position pattern...

E pentatonic minor - Third Position pattern...

We think there is some sort of bermuda triangle around the 'B' or VII. position, Lets take a looky at what all three pentatonic scales in the Key of C look with a focus on the 7th-10th frets...

E pentatonic...

A Pentatonic...

D Pentatonic...

The pentatonic scales are like the major scales because they both use one huge pattern that shifts around for the other keys, The 'A pentatonic' is a good scale to use because it is the main 'minor position' for the Key of C...

"A pentatonic" - First Position minor...

The 'A' is the root of the 'A pentatonic'

If you really study just one pentatonic scale then you know all 12, Also remember that the pentatonic scale sits on any minor position of a key...
