Here are some chords that we have barely touched on - add9, add11 and add13. These fall in the Pentatonic Chords family, pentatonic means five and it is referring to the number of 'tones' that are played together. Again there is a fine line between a chord and a scale and these chords are that fine line...
Our 'A Minor 9th' chord means something else to most everyone else, To us it is "A C E + B" but according to some it is "A C E + G + B" which would basically be an "A Minor 7th with a B" (which happens to be the 11th). The problem with 'traditional' naming is that rearranging the tones comes up with other chord names - its very similiar to the 'minor scale' which is just the major scale scrambled...
The proper way to name a chord should be by naming it fully being specific about what 'extensions' are used - this should also be noted from a certain key which could only be notated with roman numerals (I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII.)
A C E - G - B (A minor 7/11)
C E G - B - A (C major 7/13)
E G B - A - C (E minor 11/13)
When you play a chord that is already extended (four tones) and then go to add yet another extension (five tones) then you have only three tones left that you can add, The base of the chord is the "7th" chord. The 'add' gives hint that the chord is automatically "7th" thus meaning you can use the simple (add9 - add11 - add13)
A C E + G + B
- A minor add9
A C E + G + D - A minor add11
- A Pentatonic Scale
A C E + G + F - A minor add13
Noteworthy Observations
The "A minor add9" chord shown
above is like three basic chords combined together - A minor, C Major, and E
minor.
The 'A minor add11' above happens to be the 'A Pentatonic' scale - Any 'X
minor add11' happens to be a "X Pentatonic Scale"...
The 'A minor add13' above happens to a 'F major add9' chord - F A C + E + G
The add9 chords are really the only valid "Extended 7th" chord - All of the add13 chords are actually add9 chords so there is no real need to learn them other than which add9 is relative to it...
