Open G

The 'Open G' (G B D G B D) is a common dobro tuning, The bottom three strings (G B D) are the octaves of the top three strings (G B D) - When you use an open tuning then all of the chord and scale patterns are different so its like starting over, It's probably best to play by shapes and patterns and become familiar with the tone names on the top and bottom string - This tuning is great for five and six tone chords, If you need to play true eleventh chords then maybe an open tuning would suit you better...

You should have a strong understanding of how to modifiy the basic chords to create the 'power', 'sus' and 'add9' chords. The tones used for chords and scales do not change so you can use our 'chords formula' page to determine what tones to use for some of the more advanced chords. Open G is an odd tuning, Its not too great to use if you only have one guitar unless you decide to play in Open G all the time...
