The Open D sus4 tuning is commonly called 'D A D G A D', We have a habit of calling things what they really are and this is a D suspended 4 when you strum the open strings. This tuning sounds really cool yet there is a tense feeling to it, The sus4 fits on major and minor positions because it is a 'power' based chord. With this tuning you can easily find 'one finger' chords and the pivot point seems to fall on the IV...
The one string that is fun to play with is the 'G' string, When you play all the open strings then it is the G string that decides what type of chord you are playing - If you play an A or D then you are playing a 'D power' chord - If you play an F on the G string then it would be a 'D minor' chord and if you play an F# on the G string then you are playing a 'D Major' chord...
