Just about every melody that you play on the guitar on the bottom strings can be played in several positions. Some of the better players can break a string and then just keep on playing - this is from knowing the scales well enough to be able to do this. Below we are showing three notes at three different positions that it can be played.
The only difference in sound of these different positions is that the one on the bottom string will sound brighter than the same melody played on the third smallest string - Play these three notes in all three positions and notice that they are the same
Play these three notes to hear their tones

Position 2 uses the exact same tones as position 1 and 3

This position sounds just like the first position except
with more bass, play this one and then play the first position and compare how
they sound
Remember that the three examples above are exactly the same "Tones" - Just about any melody on the Bottom four Strings can be played in another position, Our Diagram doesn't go beyond the 12th fret here but the above Melody can be played in 2 or 3 other positions not shown.
You can also mix up the three Positions above to make even more ways that you can play the same melody - Learning the Scale patterns are what help doing this. For more on this check out our lesson on Tablature and practice playing short melodies you know in other positions!
Practice the different positions with short melodies and LEARN THE MAJOR SCALE - The Major Scale is the basis for all scales and seeing that there is really just that ONE pattern will help you tremendously! The above 3 note melody can be played in several different ways - Here's a tabbed out sheet with just the 3 note melody played over and over - Just Do it!
