The newer lesson on the Nashvile Number Sytem is at http://www.guitarweek.com/nashville/index.php which is an interface to our raw chords database, This here is the older lesson and may in the future be deleted, We use to not think too highly of this system but now find it crucial in pinpointing specific chords...
The Nashville System is widely used in country, bluegrass and some other types of music. The Nashville Numbers just numbers the chords by roman Numerals. Each Key Has 7 Chords so the numbering system uses:
Nashville #----Chord------Notes used
- (I) --- - C major ----- C, E, G
- (II) - -- D minor ----- D, F, A
- (III) -- E minor ----- E, G, B
- (IV) -- F major ------ F, A, C
- (V) -- - G major ------ G, B, D
- (VI) -- A minor ------ A, C, E
- (VII) - B diminished - B, D, F
The Numbering system is great for identifying the position of the ONLY three Chord TYPES (Major, Minor, Diminished ) These are the only Types of Chords - If you extend a Chord, then you just add the extension to the Roman Numeral : (II-7th or IV-11th, III-9th, ect ...)
HERE'S an Important notice:
The VII position most likely is the Diminished Chord
The II - III - and VI position most likely is a Minor Chord
The I - IV - and V position most likely is a Major Chord
Ok, we took the forever part off - its still most likely though
