     There are 3 Minor chords in each Key. The Minor chords utilize three shapes to make up all 12 minor chords, each individual minor chord is played in only three keys - We as usual will base this lesson in the Key of C for simplicity.

The A minor chord here is moved up two times to to make the D Minor and the E minor - One shape, three chords.

 If you move the A minor up TWO frets, that would make a "B minor" which is not in the key of C 

     The three minor shapes just happen to be the minor chords in the key of C. Above we used the A minor shape to create A minor - E minor - D minor. Let's look at the D minor shape and how it moves up to make the E minor and the A minor.

     This same theory applies to the E minor Shape - this time the E Minor moves up to make the A minor and the D minor.

     Remember that the three shapes shown above are used for all 12 minor chords - whether it is F# minor or Bb minor, you will use three shapes that you see above, look through the other minor chords in the other keys and look for these shapes. The lesson on CAGED shows two other shapes that can be applied in the same fashion. 

     The "Key note" indicated are for reference when you move the shapes around, Whatever note the K happens to be is the name of the chord ("K minor") - Knowing the notes on your is important when moving the shapes around. If you move the E Minor up One fret - then you must know what note comes after E (F is the next note so it would be an F Minor).
