It can be confusing to Extend chords to a 7th - 9th or 11th because it really is too simple. A Basic Chord consist of three tones, An extended chord is the Basic Chord plus one additional tone from the same key.
This may sound confusing so lets clear that up, Lets work with a chord that Uses all six strings and one that is in the Key of C. We use the Key of C exclusively in our lessons because it doesn't use any Flats or Sharps. Here is a basic A Minor chord:

The A Minor Chord uses three tones (ACE), This Basic Chord is in three different
keys. We are going to show you how the chords transform into the Extensions.
Going back to the lesson on Keys, Any Key uses 7 Tones. You have 25+ different notes you can play but still will only have seven tones. A basic chord uses three tones, which leaves you four tones that you are not using for the any of the basic chords. Those four tones make up the extended chords.
Here are the Notes used for A Minor Chord and the Extended chords - in the Key of C.
| A-C-E | A Minor |
| A-C-E-G | A Minor 7th |
| A-C-E-B | A Minor 9th |
| A-C-E-D | A Minor 11th |
| A-C-E-F | This is where the chord naturally Modulates to another chord - This is Technically a A Minor 13th and a F Major 7th |
Let's show the first extension. To make an A Minor 7th, You modify the A Minor by adding a G to the ACE. You have to replace one of the A's C's or E's with a G. (Its usually bad to not use the Root note which in this case is A)

The 9th chord follow the same rule - You take One of the A's C's or E's and replace it with a B:

With the A Minor 9th, You could have moved the C down to a B to make a 9th chord but we showed you that way so all four tones would be shown. Also if you moved the C down to B then you would not have any C's at all, This is ok. Moving both of them is also OK.
We are going to assume that you get the picture and Not show the A Minor 11th, It would be replacing any of the A's C's or E's with a D. We did not show the phantom A minor 13th because that could be seen as a F Major 7th.
Practice figuring out the A Minor Extended Chords for the other
two Keys that ALSO contain the A Minor Chord:
the Key of G
the Key of F
