How the chords are built within every Key has an incredible mathematical interconnection. This is why you are mysteriously enhanced in math and Science skills. There are only 28 Chords in any one of the 12 Keys
We are going to analyze the way the Chords are built in the Key of C. This process is the same way for all twelve Keys, you merely use the 7 notes that are used in whatever key you use. Here is a Blank pattern Sheet and you can fill in the notes of the other keys - notice that after the 7th note, the notes repeat themselves
Here are all of the notes for the Key of C - These have been extended along to show how the extensions are calculated and to give it the slide rule effect. We have recently create a flash version of this lesson where the slider effect is a reality - Chord Building with Flash...
The Top Numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) are the primary numbers that indicate the Chord. Whenever you play a Chord - The basic chord is usually always present. The basic Chord consists of the 1, 3, and 5 - Alot of time you will hear a reference to the Third or Fifth and you will hear about a ROOT note too. The 1 is considered the root note.
The rest of the notes (7, 9, 11, 13 and sometimes the 15) are the remaining notes left over after you play the basic Chords notes - These are the Extensions! The extensions are the basic Chord (1, 3, 5) with only one extension note added!
Look at this Diagram:

The (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14) just show how the notes are numbered in order - They are not really associated with the way that the Chords are built. Now look at the next Chord in This Key. Looking closely, you can se that you are using the same pattern to build the D minor chord.

When you build a Chord, You use the 1st - 3rd - 5th and that is the basic Chord. Then to extend that basic Chord, You add just one of the extensions (7,9,11) to the (1-3-5). The "13th / 6th" is commonly double taught, The lesson on extensions explains why we dub this as double taught and should be mildly covered.
