Keys tell you which chords you will most likely play (there are only 12) - If you ask someone what key a song is in, there is more than likely one of these twelve answers: Also you should note that a 'Key' and 'Scale' are pretty much the same thing, If you say you are playing in the Key of C then that means you are playing the C major scale...

Above we show the keys changing but started every column with A to show the order that the notes are changed - each time changing one note only This diagrams shows the number of sharps or flats in each key - you should notice that each time you change keys, only one sharp or flat is added. The Gb and F# are the same key and can be written either way - the Gb is or should be the proper way to write that key. |

The Key of F# and the Key of Gb are the same key. F# shows all the notes as Sharps (one fret higher), Gb shows all the notes as Flats (one fret lower), Memorize the FCGDAEB - BEADGCF patterns above, This is the pattern of notes when you cycle through the keys!
