   The Key of Db uses the notes Db, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, and C and is also known as the (Key of Bb minor) or even the (Key of A# minor), The sharp keys (C,G,D,A,E,B) do not use the '#' sign in their signatures so if you find (Key of x#) then the proper way is to convert it to a b (flat)...

   To learn the scales you must take the above pattern as a whole and chop it up into smaller useable patterns, Then you come up with 'box patterns' which are used over for the other keys, When you play a scale then you will be playing 'three tones' per string with exception to the 'Gstring' which will only play 'two tones', The first box pattern for this key will look like this...

Now we will 'remove' one tone on the left <<< side of the pattern and add one to the right >>> side of the pattern to get the next...

   All three of those patterns are valid but for some 'box patterns' we offset the pattern by pushing the bottom string tones up, We don't mention modes often but here is a diagram showing the 'mixolydian' mode when ascending and the 'aeolian' mode when descending...

   When you learn a key then you most likely start with the pattern that starts at the lower end of the frets, Each key will have a different starting pattern so check out all twelve keys, When you surf to the 'Key of E' then you will find this as the 'starting pattern'...

Compare the F minor 13th to the Db major 7th at the very top

    * The 13th chord is most often named a 6th chord (F minor 6th = F minor 13th) the chord building structure indicates that a 6th chord, contrary to what others believe, should be named 13th. If the naming of this extension as a 6th is the proper way then why isn't there a F minor 8th, F minor 10th, and F minor 12th or F minor 14th... (See our 14th chords lesson)...
