Hungarian Scale...
Ionian Block

The ionian block is one of the better blocks to learn because it starts on the keys' root, It is also one of the easier patterns to remember because four of the strings use the same frets...

Ionian block in the Key of C...

Ionian block with 'duplicate' tone removed...

The first pattern shown is what you should learn because it may be confusing to not play the duplicate (on the fourth string at the 12th fret), The every other fret pattern on the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th strings make this pattern easy to remember...

With this block you can easily move it around to make up the other eleven keys, That is of course only if you know the notes on the top E string...

Ionian block in the Key of E...

Ionian block in the Key of F...

Ionian block in the Key of Gb...

Ionian block in the Key of G...

Ionian block in the Key of Ab...

Ionian block in the Key of A...

Ionian block in the Key of Bb...

Ionian block in the Key of B...

It's really important to remember that this is not a mode at all which would be a specifc tone to the next specific tone (E to E) (F to F), You can find all seven modes within the block we call ionian...

Ionian mode in the 'ionian block' (Key of E)...

Lydian mode in the 'ionian block' (Key of E)...

The blocks are just logical divisions of the fretboard which make learning the 'major scales' and the altered major scales as well, The altered scales such as the (Aug1, Aug2, Aug5, Aug6) are easier to learn when you know a block really good...

Aug2 in the 'ionian block' (Key of E)...

Aug2 in the 'ionian block' (Key of F)...

Aug2 in the 'ionian block' (Key of Gb)...

When you focus on a certain block then the specific chord shapes for that block will be the same no matter what key you are playing in, You can find just about every chord within each block...

I. C major (ionian block)...

This major chord uses the "E major shape"...

IV. F major (ionian block)...

This major chord uses the "A major shape"...

V. G major (ionian block)...

This major chord uses the "A major shape"...

You will only find this combination of 'chord shapes' on this block no matter what key you are in, All three major chords can be found in any block but they always use different shape combinations, You take the same approach with the 'minor chords'...

VI. A minor (ionian block)...

This minor chord uses the "C minor shape"...

II. D minor (ionian block)...

This minor chord uses the "E minor shape"...

III. E minor (ionian block)...

This minor chord uses the "G minor shape"...

This 'block' thing pertains to the division of your 'fretboard' more than anything, The most popular block of them all is most likely the Phrygian block which is the key of C in the first position...

Phrygian block in the Key of C...

Aeolian block in Key of C...

The best way to learn all the blocks is to practice them in the key that places it at the lowest part of the guitar, The key of E is the best choice for studying the 'ionian mode'...

As a general rule we always say to study the "Key of C" because its the pure key which has no sharps or flats, The key of C should be your primary focus when you are studying the structure of any chord or scale, You should learn all seven blocks in the Key of C...

The next block going down <<< the fretboard is the 'locrian block'... ... The next block going up >>> the fretboard is the 'dorian block'...
