What makes the guitar hard to understand compared to the piano is the fact that a lot of tones on the guitar are duplicate tones. If you count every note on all 6 strings up to the 12th fret, you will come up with 72 notes - However if you count the tones, there are only 37...
If you play any key of a piano, that will be the only tone - this is not the case for the guitar. Just click the circles below and the duplicates will appear. Remember that these are not Octaves - they are duplicate tones... Our diagram shows where there are up to 4 tones duplicated at times, on a guitar with 17 frets or more there are up to 5 tones duplicated at a time...
This lesson is to show you the importance of learning the patterns as a whole and to point out that one melody, scale or chord can be played in multiple positions. It should also help you determine the difference between a note and a tone..
