The Dorian mode is a minor mode that starts on the second (II.) position of whatever key you are in, In the Key of C it would be 'D E F G A B C D' and probably sounds best played against the 'II. D minor' chord...

The 'D' tone doesn't start until the third string so stacking the first and second doesn't work, This is why the second position mode starts way up on the 7th fret, This is so you aren't moving your hands up>>> the neck of the guitar unless that's what you want to do...

We can't say enough about the fact that you are still playing the 'Key of C' when you play any of the seven modes, If you don't totally know the scales then don't spend too much time on these...
