The chords on the banjo are relatively simple and limited as well, You should learn the basic chords first which are 'major chords' and 'minor chords'. The most popular are the major chords which are also the strongest ones so let's study those, Any time you study a chord remember to use it's root note as the primary focus...
When we say a chord is a chord then we mean a chord is a chord, A "G major" chord is three tones (G B D) played together so any G B D played together will be a major chord...

The 'chord' shown above IS a 'G major' because there is a G and there is a B and there is a D, This is not a practical chord to learn because you can't move it around and you have to use two hands to form the chord and then strum it too...
The rule to build a chord is to use all of the tones required (G B D) and pick ones that are within reach of each other, Any chord you make is not only movable but will also have 'three' positions that it can be played in, Below are the three major chords in the Key of G and the final chord on each diagram are the same chord as the first one but one octave higher...
I. G major
IV. C major
V. D major
The most important detail is the 'root' note of the chord which is what you pay attention to when you move it, If you are playing a 'G' major then you want to watch the 'G' or if you are playing a 'T' gazoola chord then you want to watch the 'T'...
The minor chords are just as popular as the major ones and like the major chords you will find three minor chords in any key, The minor chords for the Key of G are 'E minor', 'A minor' and 'B minor'...
VI. E minor
II. A minor
III. B minor
Once you learn the six basic major and minor chords in this key then it's alot easier to play the other keys, You should not learn the chords as 'GBD' or 'ACE' but focus on the shape and its center (root)...
