Augmented Chords

Augmented chords do not follow general theory guidelines, They use notes outside of the general structure of normal common chords and are truly unique. Its probably best to learn these as 'chord shapes' seeing that there is no strong formula other than each tone being an equal distances to the next, Normally you take a basic chord and modify it to make up the 7ths, 9th or 11th, These seem to be interval based chords so there are only 12 (If you look close there are only 4)...

The C Augmented. (C E G#) is a good example to use with our octaves worksheet.

With regular chords there are the five different shapes CAGED that produces several variations of each chord where as with the augmented chords there are not many different patterns or variations. Check out the pattern created by the C augmented chord using our Octaves Worksheet...

Augmented Chord
C Augmented - E Augmented - G# Augmented

The Augmented chord steps all over itself when it comes to the name, the C Augmented uses the same tones as the E Augmented and the G# Augmented (How Strange is that) - This is because on a mathematical basis they can be considered Interval Based Chords - Even our version of the 'suspended chords' - (powered extensions) theory has some naming issues, The mystery of modulation can most likely be found within the Diminished Chords...

When someone says augment then you should take it lightly, You can create an 'augmented chord' by 'augmenting' certain degrees of a key, We show this in our Augmented Scales lesson...
