Arpeggios are chords that are played really slow creating the effect that a note by note melody is being played, They can be played somewhat faster but too fast makes it strumming instead of arpeggiation. The small slow arpeggios which are basic chords played somewhat slow are the most common, The first position "A minor" uses the bottom five strings which can be arpeggiated out into two sets of 1 2 3 4...
NOTE: to our south paw friends, These count backwards instead of forward... (You should count forwards...)
...
Make the "A minor" and then start on the second.A string as '1' and when you count to '4' you will be on the 'B' string, Then you start on the bottom string as '1' and count to '4' and you will then be third.D string and then you are ready to start back on the second.A string as '1' again. Do this 2 times and then change to E major...

Use the exact same strumming pattern as with the "A minor"
Make the "E major" and then start on the second.A string as '1' and when you count to '4' you will land on the fifth.B string, Then you start on the bottom string as '1' and count to '4' and you will then land on the third.D string and then you are ready to start back on the second.A string as '1' again. Do this 2 times and then change back to A minor...

This shows the 1-2-3-4 split up between all six strings...
The 'arpeggios' above are used on five strings giving it a smooth 1-2-3-4 feel, Try various chords using only four strings and use 1-2-3 as shown on this first position "D minor" chord.

The idea is to get where you can 'pick' the arpeggio pattern without thinking about it, Practice 'arpeggiating' by using one picking pattern and the major chords of any key. These are known as 'studies' when you play little 'songs' you make up over and over, These studies are good for practicing the '1234' and '123' arpeggio patterns and you should try to focus on the counting (mentally or out loud)...
